I’m not a history buff like Evan but I did have a very sweet experience at the D-Day sites. One of the highlights for me was Saint-Mere Église, the first town liberated on D-Day thanks to American paratroopers. The church there has a mannequin soldier still hanging off the roof, reminding us of the soldier whose parachute got caught on the steeple and hung there in the early hours of June 6, 1944, playing dead for several hours to avoid being shot. Two windows in the church were destroyed during the war and 50 years ago paratrooper veterans donated these stunning stained glass replacements. I just can’t get over how hauntingly beautiful they are.
